Laurie Anderson: STORIES FROM THE NERVE BIBLE
1994 288pp Harper Perennial 4to paperback. Illustrated in colour and black & white. Gently rubbed at edges, VG+.
A Retrospective: 1972-1992. Best known for the surprise top ten hit "O Superman," the multi-discipline performance artist Laurie Anderson looks back at her career to date (at the time of publication). From the introduction:
I believe it's possible that language is a virus, as William S. Burroughs claims. But to believe that language is a disease, first you have to believe that it is alive. So, is language alive? In what way can words be alive?
What I mean by the "nerve bible" is, of course, the body. This book is my way of looking for something, of frisking myself, like looking for keys. Parts of the body appear and reappear throughout the book, adding up to a kind of self-portrait, although not a very naturalistic one."
