[The Witches Mill]: THE CRAFTY WITCHES Press Photograph
1964 approx 256 x 204pp United Press black & white photograph. Some touch-up pen hand embellishments to Gardner’s robes and beard. Slightly creased at centre top of photo (due to paperclip) Overall VG.
“Journal Copy” stamped on reverse. Dated 9/26/1964. Caption reads "The Crafty Witches (first of five). More and more tourists visiting England in the near future will be asking for a glimpse of the working (witches) of Britain, which now number about 5000. The self-styled “Queen of the Witches” - Mrs. Monique Wilson, formerly the High Priestess of the covens (witches’ circles) of Scotland - serves as curator in The Witches’ Mill on the Isle of Man - the only witches’ museum in the world."
Gardner had died in February of this year (1964). In his will he bequeathed the Museum contents (but not the Mill buildings) to Monique Wilson. After some manoeuvring Monique and her husband “Scotty” Wilson managed to acquire both and ran the museum for just over 8 years before selling on the collection to Ripley’s in the U.S.
