VILE INTERNATIONAL Vol. 1 No. 4

1974 48pp Banana Productions A4 stapled journal. Illustrated. Rubbed at edges else VG.

Anna Banana (Anne Lee Long, who died in 2024), a Canadian artist known for her mail-art and performance art projects, founded VILE magazine as a satirical take on FILE magazine, which itself had begun as a parody of LIFE magazine. According to Banana, FILE had become too mainstream and had distanced itself from the subversive DIY mail-art magazine it had started as, so VILE was created to fill the gap. True to Banana’s Dadaist leanings, VILE embraced absurdist humour, anti-art aesthetics and general chaos, including a famously nonsensical numbering system across its issues.

Case in point, this is actually the second issue of Vile, one of only 200 copies. The striking cover photograph is by Jimmy de Sana. Inside features material by Genesis P-Orridge and many more.
